Star Little Thing - Fishface

New single from the Dublin band and an excellent song it is too. Taken off their album 'It's Easy To Be Alive You Just Are' which you can get through their MySpace. Haven't heard it so can't comment on the quality but I do like this song. Here's the video.

Review: Oxegen Day 2 - 12 July 2008

A brilliant day at Oxegen with some great performances and luckily for me, none of the bands I really wanted to see clashed with each other so there were no difficult decisions in who to go to see.

The day started off pretty slow, with no real standouts on the early bill. Caught a bit of Powderfinger who were ok, Camille O'Sullivan who put on a decent show for something a bit different and the end of The Music, who I wouldn't be a fan of but who attracted a decent crowd to the Pet Sounds tent.

My Morning Jacket

Things got going after that with My Morning Jacket, one of the main reasons I decided to go to Oxegen for the day. Wasn't a very big crowd in the tent which I was slightly surprised at but it didn't seem to affect the band. The sound wasn't great (a common trait of all the concerts) but that's to be expected at a festival. I really enjoyed the show, with opener One Big Holiday a particular favourite of mine. Touch Me I'm Going To Scream (Part II) was a brilliant finale of a set light on new tracks (only Touch Me and Evil Urges from the new album, if my memory is right) but a set that never relented with intensity. Lasted approx 45mins, which seeing as how their usual show length is close to 3 hours, I think they did a good job of condensing a typical concert into that timeframe. I'm just hoping they return on their own for a full show soon.

British Sea Power

From there, I traveled down to see British Sea Power in the Green Room. I got their highly acclaimed last album 'Do You Like Rock Music' but never really gave it a fair listen. After this show though, I think I'll be returning to it as they put on a strong set high on energy and good songs. Very enjoyable.

Yeasayer

Then another of the big bands for me, Yeasayer in the 2FM New Band Stage. I thought this was brilliant and that the set was perfectly paced and performed. Ending with the double shot of 2080 and Sunrise was a fantastic end to the show. Not a particularly packed tent again but an enthusiastic crowd and the band seemed to enjoy it.

There was a bit of a lull then which I used to take in a couple of Vampire Weekend songs (don't understand the hype but they definitely got the crowd going and everyone seemed to love it.) Also had a quick glance at the Main Stage for Amy Winehouse just to see if she would get through it which she seemed to do as well as possible for her these days.

Seasick Steve

I then headed back to the Pet Sounds tent for Seasick Steve. This for me, was the surprise of the day. I was expecting a small crowd as he's not exactly the biggest name. But the place was absolutely jammed and his every move was greeted with mass hysteria, it was great. He's a great performer and he really got the crowd going, even taking up one girl to sit on the stage in front of him as he sang her a song. The crowd absolutely loved every second of it, with repeated 'Seasick Steve' chants, even as people left the tent afterwards. Definitely one of the big performances of the weekend I'd imagine for anyone who was there.

Richard Hawley

Caught a bit of the Stereophonics, who always seem to be on the line-up somewhere. They were grand, they're a good festival band but after a couple of songs I'd had enough and wandered to see Richard Hawley put on a stunning set in the Pet Sounds tent. It was a fantastic performance and a revisit to his albums is definitely in order. His voice is really spectacular and the small crowd seemed to really enjoy it.

REM

Then on to the big hitters of the day for me, REM. Having met Peter Buck earlier in the day walking out of My Morning Jacket (lovely guy) I was really looking forward to this one and they didn't let anyone down. I couldn't imagine a better festival setlist for the band than the one they performed last night. Sure, there were a couple of songs I would have loved to have heard (Pretty Persuasion mainly) but to get songs like 'Ignoreland' and 'Fall On Me' was fantastic. There were the big hits of 'Losing My Religion', 'The One I Love', 'Man On The Moon', 'Imitation Of Life', 'It's The End Of The World..' which went down fantastically well with Stipe mentioning at the end of 'Losing My Religion' that it was the first time an audience had actually sung the mandolin part. The newer stuff fitted in perfectly with the songs having come a long way from some of the rehearsals this time last year which was mentioned a couple of times as well. Couldn't have asked for a better performance.

The National

Finally, I went to see The National which was the first time I've been in a position to see them despite their numerous appearances here. They had some stiff competition with The Verve, The Prodigy, The Manic Street Preachers and Justice playing at the same time but they still attracted a sizable crowd. I've been a fan of the band for a long time and it was a real thrill to see them live and it more than lived up to my expectations. It was a very powerful set with some real standout tracks. 'Start A War' was great, as was 'Mr. November.' My favourite was 'Mistaken For Strangers' which was stunning. A great end to the day.

Overall, it'd be hard to beat that day of music. Today would be great as well I'm sure with The Hold Steady, Band Of Horses and The Raconteurs but unfortunately I'm not in attendance. I'll be interested to hear how those shows in particular go, if anyone attends. and if anyone saw some other great performance during the weekend that I missed. (Must mention Blood Red Shoes, who were playing the same time as REM. I caught the last song of their set and it was brilliant. Luckily I saw them a few months ago in Paris and they put on great show and I'm sure last night was something similar.)

Matthew Ryan

A great singer songwriter who's released some excellent albums, my favourite being 'Concussion'. He released a new album this year called 'Matthew Ryan Vs. The Silver State' and an excellent record it is too. All of his back catalogue are available to buy through his website, I would also recommend the ep 'May Day' which has some great stuff on it. This is the radio edit of the first track on the new album called Dulce Et Decorum Est.

Slim Cessna's Auto Club

One of my favourite discoveries of recent times, Slim Cessna's Auto Club are from Colorado in the States. Certainly coming under the huge Americana genre, these guys take influences ranging from bluegrass to punk to create their sound. They've been together with various members revolving around Slim Cessna himself and a couple of other core members. They have a new album out this year called 'Cipher' which you can pick up through their website or their label. No Depression magazine have hailed them in the past as the best live band in America, here's a few mp3s to get you started.

4. The Postelles - 123 Stop

Harking back to the 60s for some of their rock/pop influences this New York quartet should make a big impact this year. Production by Albert Hammond Jr. will get them attention but their songs will make sure that attention is justified. A number of songs available to download on their MySpace.

5. Romantica - On My Mind

Singer/songwriter Ben Kyle has described Romantica as 'Irish Americana Pop', although not sure if there's much competition in that genre. He was born in Belfast before moving to Minneapolis in his teens. Has opened for Ryan Adams in the past and I'll feature a duet between the two next week.

9. Titus Andronicus - Titus Andronicus

No, not the Shakespeare play, this is a five piece rock n roll band from New Jersey. Their debut record 'The Airing Of Grievances' was released earlier this year to a lot of favourable reviews. I wasn't mad about all of the album but they have some good songs, with this one being my favourite.

1. Elsinore - The General

Review: Laura Marling Whelans 1 July 2008

Really enjoyed her debut album and was looking forward to last night and she didn't disappoint. She's got a great voice and she's a very talented songwriter and it showed in her performance last night. Of course, there were a few issues as you'd expect with any new artist on stage but overall I thought she put on a very strong performance. It was just her and her guitar and for a few songs she was accompanied by Marcus Mumford (he opened the gig and put on a good show too. His band are called Mumford and Sons and are well worth checking out. Robotnik was the other support and again was very good especially on the folky songs he did at the start).

Personally, I was hoping to hear Night Terror but hopefully next time I see her she'll bring a fiddle so she can play it. She played a good number of new songs which is a good sign that she's not happy to rest on the success of the first album. The crowd was very respectful and the place was jammed, with Laura mentioning a couple of times that she wasn't expecting so many people. She's obviously developing a following and hopefully she'll be back soon to build on it.

Night Terror

Review: Neil Young Malahide Castle, Dublin 29th June 2008

This was my first time seeing Neil live and so it was a huge thrill to finally see him play. This was tempered however by the set that he played and also the awful sound. First off, the set.

Opening with an approx 10min version of Love and Only Love is not exactly the opener I was expecting but since I love that song I was delighted to hear it. However, as the first few songs continued it was very obvious that this concert was going to be hard work for even the most dedicated fan, let alone the casual fan, of whom there were of course plenty in an outdoor gig. The extended jams would have worked in a smaller venue but outdoor, they were largely lost on the audience.

Things definitely took a turn for the better with Hey Hey, My My followed by a fantastic stretch of Too Far Gone, Oh Lonesome Me, Needle and The Damage Done, Unknown Legend and Old Man. Following this stretch he went back into extended jam mode with Words. Then came the song that unfortunately most people will remember most about the gig. A 27 minute version of No Hidden Path would have been extremely tough going in somewhere like Vicar Street. Personally, in Malahide Castle it turned laughable.

Ending the main set with that, he came back out and played a cover of A Day in The Life and then walked off stage. It certainly wasn't the best way to end it but probably appropriate for the concert that preceded it.

It must be mentioned that it wasn't helped by the terrible sound. The music was extremely muffled and Neil's vocals weren't very strong either. It did slightly improve as the gig went on but since a lot of the songs involved extensive jamming, not being able to hear the guitars properly is obviously a major problem.

Neil didn't say much during the concert, a few generic 'glad to be here' type comments. Overall, I would sum it up as could have been better. I'm all for artists like Young not turning into a glorified jukebox and testing the crowd. A balance has to be struck though in a concert the size of last night and I don't think that balance was found. When Young is facing his guitarists for long stretches, with his back to the audience you couldn't help but feel outside of the whole event.

Maybe because after seeing Springsteen two days before, my expectation of what a show should be like were too big but I was definitely hoping for a bit more last night. That being said, there was a fantastic stretch of songs that were great to see and for that 45 mins or so it was one of the best concerts I've seen in a while. If this had been in the Olympia or Vicar Street, it would have been significantly better. On the way home on the Dart, a few people broke into singing 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart'. It summed up the night pretty well for me, the fans were there but Neil didn't make it easy for us.

Review: Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Parc Des Princes, Paris 27th June 2008

My 7th and final Springsteen concert on the tour and a fantastic way to end the run. 'Adam Raised A Cain' was a brilliant, fierce opener. 'Spirit In The Night' is another favourite of mine so was delighted to see that again. After 'Spirit' Bruce went into the crowd and started taking some of the dozens of signs requesting songs. Probably took about 10 and this led to 'Rendezvous'. He kept the rarities coming with Janey Don't You Lose Heart soon after. I was quite close and even there some people didnt seem to recognise the songs so i wonder what it was like elsewhere in the stadium.

After Mary's Place, Bruce held up a sign for 'Fire'. Showing it to the band, Max obviously didn't see it perfectly and thus started playing the intro to I'm On Fire, making Bruce run back to the mic to stop him. Fire was great. Then came the highlight of the show for me and indeed the highlight of all the shows I've seen. Bruce strolled over to the piano, had a word in Roy's ear and sat down at the piano with all the band bar Max leaving the stage. He then started 'For You' which is my favourite Springsteen song, especially solo and something I never thought I'd hear live. After that, The River was brilliant but personally it couldn't match the song that had come before it.

Nice surprise after Badlands was Out In The Street, which was performed excellently. The encore didn't hold any surprises but was still a very strong set. Bobby Jean, although not one of the best songs to play in that slot was very powerful.

Clarence was off form at the start of the show, missing a few cues and completely messing up the Janey solo but as the night went on, he got back into it. Nils solo on Because The Night is always a highlight and the run of songs starting with For You until Long Walk Home was extremely powerful. Combined with the fun songs like Darlington County and Spirit and you have a great show. Definitely one of the best shows I've seen, here's hoping it won't be the last time I see Springsteen with the E Street Band.

Death Cab For Cutie KCRW Session Big fan of the KCRW sessions and this is another excellent one.

Bruce Springsteen: Hollywood, FL. 19 November 2005 A great recording of a classic Springsteen solo concert. Great versions of 'Fade Away', 'Roll Of The Dice', 'Santa Ana', 'Drive All Night etc. A great concert for the hardcore Springsteen fan.

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: Hamburg, 21 June 2008 Recordings in stadiums are usually quite bad but this is a good one. Great night for the taper to get it right too with the first performance of 'Held Up Without A Gun' in nearly 28 years. Other notable songs include 'Something In The Night', 'Incident on 57th Street' and an excellent 'Spirit In The Night'.

Fleet Foxes BBC Session 18 June 2008 Nice session with the band performing three songs and an extended interview. Well worth the small download.

Harry Chapin - Soundstage

For me, the greatest storyteller in music, Harry's live performances were supposed to be amazing, with the bootlegs that I have bearing this out. He's written some of the most amazing story songs and always played his music with such passion. His live album 'Greatest Stories Live' is one of my most-played albums of all time dating back a number of years.

He left a hell of a good legacy behind him and this performance is a good start. It's a recording for Soundstage from back in 1974. All these songs are magnificent, pay special attention to 'Sniper' and the pure emotion that Harry puts into the song.

A Catch Up Post (of sorts)

I've been completely out of touch with the music world the past few days due to a crazy work period in college. So a catch up post is in order with a couple of things I wanted to post but didn't have the time for. Most people have probably seen and heard all of this already but there may be a few like me who've missed out.

First off, The Raconteurs were on Conan and were amazing. They should take the horns on tour with them after this performance. 'Many Shades Of Black', which I've said before is probably my favourite track on the record, was pure brilliance. 'Old Enough' was fantastic too. Nice to see Brendan take the spotlight. Won't find too many better tv performances around.



This next one is even older again but I've been meaning to post this performance from pitchfork.tv for a while. It's Black Mountain and their song 'Tyrants' which I featured on the playlist not so long ago.

1. The Hold Steady - Constructive Summer (Live)

A live track of one of the best songs off the new album due out next month. The album's really great, definitely one of the best of the year so far. Gets better with each listen.

2. Julie Ocean - My Revenge

American band specialising in short power-pop blasts. Their album clocks in at ten songs in under 25minutes. A good summer album.

3. The New York Fund - Going To New York

London band, they've supported The Hold Steady in the past and have some really good songs on their MySpace. This is my favourite.

4. Try Me Bicycle - Big Small

My favourite song on the playlist this week, this four piece are from Arizona and have released their debut album 'Voicings' which 'Big Small' is taken from. Brilliant song.

5. The Slant - The Life Of A Biological Organism

Four piece from Pennsylvania, this is taken from their album 'Old North'. Can buy the album online from their website

6. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!! (Live)

Great song, this is their performance on Jools Holland not so long ago. Took me a while to get into the album but really starting to enjoy it now.

7. ambeR rubarth - You Will Love This Song

She's got a big MySpace following but I've only recently heard of her, this is a cool track. Not the sort of thing I would usually go for but there's something about this track that captured my attention when I first heard it.

8. Saving J - Bus Stop

Irish band, this track was released last year and gained the band a fair amount of airplay. They're about to release an excellent new single 'Kick Off' at the end of the month. You can watch the video for the song on their website.

9. Damien Rice - 9 Crimes (Live)

Nice version taken from the On The Verge website of 9 Crimes from Damien's last album. He's currently doing a ten day car journey from Dublin to Barcelona where he aims to write a song every day. You can follow his progress on his website.

10. Goodmorning Valentine - Easter Park

Great track, Joey Beltram's vocals are really at the fore of this sparse song. They've got a number of other songs available to download on their MySpace, I'll be hopefully featuring these guys again on the site soon.

My Morning Jacket - Black Cab Sessions

These guys always get some great bands into the back of a cab and this is one of the best performances on the site. Still the best album of the year, here's the link to the video. Check out all the archives if you've never been on the site before, some great performances. These type of things don't always work but I like this site and their videos.
